Wichita Falls runs on lake water. The city treats supply from Lake Arrowhead, Lake Kickapoo and Lake Kemp, and Kemp's water goes through a reverse osmosis plant before it is blended with the rest. Since 2018, treated wastewater has also been returned to Lake Arrowhead through the city's indirect potable reuse project.

Water is not taken for granted here. During the 2010 to 2015 drought the lakes fell below 19 percent of capacity, and the city still enforces year-round rules, including one that bans running an irrigation system with broken parts or leaks. Finding and fixing that leak is plumbing work.

The city's Building Inspections office has its own plumbing and mechanical inspectors and runs a backflow program. Texas licenses plumbers through the State Board of Plumbing Examiners; ask for the license number.
