The city is named for a waterfall that is no longer there. A small fall on the Wichita River gave Wichita Falls its name in 1876 and washed away in an 1886 flood. In 1987 the city built a 54-foot waterfall beside the river in Lucy Park, and drivers heading south on Interstate 44 can see it from the highway.

Downtown, at Seventh and La Salle, stands the Newby-McMahon Building, 40 feet tall, 18 feet deep and 10 feet wide. Ripley's Believe It or Not! called it the world's littlest skyscraper after it went up in 1919, and the name stuck.
